Foxconn Faces New Allegations of Labor Violations at iPhone Production Facility

Foxconn, the largest iPhone supplier to Apple, is once again under fire for alleged labor violations at its massive factory in Zhengzhou, China. A labor watchdog, China Labor Watch (CLW), has accused Foxconn of several unethical practices, including wage delays, overreliance on temporary workers, and discrimination against women and minorities. These accusations bring renewed attention to the ongoing labor issues within Apple’s supply chain, despite the company’s promises to uphold higher standards for workers.

Violations of Chinese Labor Laws

The allegations focus on Foxconn’s handling of temporary staff during peak production seasons. CLW reports that Foxconn employed an excessive number of temporary “dispatch workers” — over half of the workforce at its Zhengzhou plant — which violates Chinese labor law. According to the law, temporary workers should make up no more than 10% of the workforce. CLW also claims that these workers experienced delayed payments, potentially designed to prevent them from quitting before the end of the production season.

Additionally, the report highlights systemic discrimination. CLW asserts that Foxconn’s hiring applications have been found to reject minority applicants, and that pregnant women were reportedly excluded from employment due to mandatory x-ray screenings, which raises serious concerns about workplace discrimination.

Responses from Foxconn and Apple

In response to the allegations, Apple stated that its teams are actively investigating the claims. The tech giant emphasized its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of labor, human rights, and ethical conduct within its supply chain. Foxconn, on the other hand, defended its record, asserting that it is an “equal opportunity employer” and has undergone independent audits for the past two years. The company rejected the discrimination claims and affirmed its dedication to transparency and compliance with labor laws.

Some Signs of Improvement

For instance, the average number of overtime hours worked has decreased, and no underage workers were found at the Zhengzhou facility. Some workers even reported that conditions at Foxconn were better than at other factories. Despite these minor advancements, CLW insists that “core labor issues remain,” underscoring the ongoing challenges of balancing production demands with the rights and well-being of workers.
