Older iPhones tied to Apple’s Lightning connector may soon get a second life, thanks to a clever invention by engineer Ken Pillonel. Known for his pioneering work on the first USB-C iPhone in 2021, Pillonel has now developed a custom case that gives legacy iPhones access to USB-C charging and data transfer — without the need to open up the device.
The case plugs into the iPhone’s Lightning port and features an integrated USB-C connection on the outside. With this setup, users can charge their phones, sync files, and even use CarPlay without relying on fragile adapters that often fall short under heavy use.
A Simple Plug-and-Play Solution
What sets this apart from past DIY efforts is its simplicity. The case slips onto the iPhone like any standard cover, while its built-in circuitry handles both fast charging and high-speed data transfer. There’s no risk of damaging the device and no tools required. According to Pillonel, the project was designed to help fight against planned obsolescence by keeping older iPhones useful for longer.
Extending Device Lifespan and Reducing Waste
Apple officially transitioned to USB-C beginning with the iPhone 15 in 2023, but millions of Lightning-based models remain in circulation. This case provides a practical way to modernize those devices, potentially keeping them out of landfills and reducing electronic waste. Pillonel has previously worked on similar sustainability-driven projects, including USB-C cases for AirPods that gained attention in the repair and modding community.
Availability Still Unclear
Although the case is not on sale yet, Pillonel has demonstrated a working prototype and shared details of the design in a recent video. Whether it eventually reaches the market remains to be seen, but the concept offers a promising glimpse at how creative engineering can extend the lifespan of everyday tech.
