Apple has reportedly given BOE Technology the green light to supply OLED panels for the iPhone 17 Pro, but only for devices sold within China. This marks the first time BOE has been approved to produce screens for Apple’s flagship Pro series, after years of supplying panels for standard iPhones.
According to industry analyst Jukan Choi, the move signals growing confidence in BOE’s production quality and reflects a milestone in the company’s long effort to earn Apple’s trust.
A Strategic Shift in Apple’s Supply Chain
For Apple, bringing BOE into the fold is part of a broader plan to diversify its display sourcing and reduce reliance on South Korean heavyweights Samsung and LG. It also aligns with Apple’s strategy to localize some production within China, a key market where government cooperation and strong local partnerships are vital.
Working with BOE, the country’s top OLED supplier, not only strengthens Apple’s supply resilience but also reinforces its standing in one of its most important regions.
BOE’s Rocky Past with Apple
BOE’s path to this approval has not been smooth. In 2022, Apple dropped the company from the iPhone 13 display program after discovering unauthorized modifications in its panels. Since then, BOE has worked to improve its processes, and its return to Apple’s supply chain at the Pro level signals meaningful progress.
Reports suggest BOE may also receive approval for full display module production before the end of July, potentially expanding its role even further.
Competition and What Comes Next
Samsung and LG continue to dominate the OLED market for Apple’s high-end devices, particularly with ProMotion-equipped displays. However, BOE’s entry introduces new competitive pressure that could give Apple more pricing leverage and manufacturing flexibility.
For now, BOE’s role is limited to China-only iPhone 17 Pro units. Still, if the partnership proves successful, it could pave the way for future global contracts. Large-scale production is expected to begin later this summer ahead of Apple’s September launch timeline.
