iPhone 13 Gets Satellite Connectivity with iOS 18.5 Update

by admin

Apple has just rolled out iOS 18.5, bringing satellite connectivity to the iPhone 13 series. Previously, this feature was only available to newer models like the iPhone 14, 15, and 16, but now, even more users can benefit from the ability to stay connected in areas without traditional cellular coverage.

The update enables iPhone 13 owners to access satellite services from participating carriers, offering a reliable communication option when conventional networks are unavailable. This update builds on Apple’s existing emergency satellite features, now extending satellite-powered messaging to a larger group of users.

How It Works and Carrier Support

This new satellite functionality does not replace Apple’s Emergency SOS but complements it. Instead of relying solely on Apple’s network, participating carriers—like T-Mobile, which collaborates with Starlink—are providing satellite network access through their own constellations.

Apple confirmed the addition in its iOS 18.5 release notes, stating: “Carrier-provided satellite features are now available on all iPhone 13 models.” The update is expected to be available to the public soon.

Satellite connectivity was first introduced for iPhone 14 and newer models with iOS 18.3, but this update extends that capability to the iPhone 13 series, making the technology available to a much broader user base.

Why the Feature Is Coming Now

When the iPhone 13 was first released, there were rumors that it would support satellite technology. Back in 2021, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that Apple had the hardware ready, but was still searching for the right service partner. With Globalstar now onboard, along with the expansion of other satellite networks, Apple is finally enabling the feature.

However, the competition in the satellite connectivity space is intensifying. Elon Musk’s Starlink has reportedly made moves to slow Apple’s progress to strengthen its own position in the market.

A Leap Toward the Future

By adding satellite messaging to the iPhone 13, Apple is providing millions of users with access to essential communication tools, especially in emergencies or remote areas. As more carriers join the satellite network, this update marks a significant step forward in making satellite connectivity more widely available, no longer limited to only the latest iPhone models.
