Jabil, a major U.S.-based electronics manufacturer and longstanding Apple supplier, is preparing to establish a second factory in India. The new facility will be located in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, and will focus on increasing the production of AirPods casings.
This expansion reflects Apple’s broader strategy to reduce its reliance on Chinese manufacturing and shift more of its production to India. While Apple has already ramped up iPhone and AirPods manufacturing in India with partners like Foxconn, the proposed factory highlights India’s growing importance in Apple’s supply chain.
Tamil Nadu: A Key Location for Apple’s Supply Chain Strategy
Jabil, which has been producing AirPods charging case components in India for some time, aims to broaden its manufacturing capabilities with this new site in Tamil Nadu. The planned factory will primarily focus on manufacturing plastic enclosures for the AirPods, rather than assembling the complete units. Jabil executives reportedly met with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin in April 2025 to discuss the project and visited the potential site.
According to a government insider, “Jabil is looking at Trichy as a potential site for AirPods production. A final decision is expected by June or July.”
The move highlights Tamil Nadu’s growing role as a hub for high-tech manufacturing in India. The state has become a magnet for Apple’s suppliers, offering incentives and developing infrastructure to attract foreign investment.
Apple’s Push to Diversify Its Manufacturing
Apple has been under increasing pressure to diversify its manufacturing operations outside of China. Ongoing trade tensions and disruptions caused by the pandemic have underscored the risks associated with relying heavily on one region. As a result, Apple has accelerated its plans to expand production in other countries, with India becoming a key focus.
In addition to Jabil’s potential new factory, Foxconn has also announced plans to significantly ramp up its iPhone production in India, with expectations to double output by the end of 2025. Jabil’s second factory could further solidify India’s role as a central player in Apple’s global manufacturing network.
Although Jabil has not confirmed specific details, the potential expansion suggests a significant investment in the region. If the factory goes ahead, it could bring local job opportunities, stimulate economic growth, and enhance the stability of Apple’s supply chain.
With Apple’s continued focus on India, Jabil’s move could play a pivotal role in shaping the future of AirPods manufacturing in the country.
