Apple has announced that there will be no further hardware upgrades for its premium AirPods Max headphones. Despite recent tweaks, including the addition of a USB-C port and new color options, the company has stated that the sales performance of the AirPods Max does not warrant major hardware updates.
Limited Updates for a Premium Product
Since its launch in 2020, the AirPods Max has only received minor updates, the most recent being in September 2024. These updates introduced USB-C compatibility and fresh color choices but left the core features of the headphones unchanged. Notably, the AirPods Max still lacks the latest H2 chip found in newer models like the AirPods Pro, which means it does not include some of the advanced features such as Adaptive Audio.
Bloomberg reports that, while Apple may continue to release firmware updates to enhance the product’s functionality, there are “no concrete plans” for any future hardware revisions to the AirPods Max.
Why No Major Updates?
The decision to halt significant upgrades seems to be tied to the AirPods Max’s underwhelming sales. Despite being praised for its exceptional sound quality, effective noise cancellation, and the unique digital crown control, the headphones have faced criticism over their steep price and issues like condensation buildup inside the ear cups. These drawbacks have likely contributed to the product’s lower-than-expected commercial success.
What’s Next for AirPods Max?
While Apple has confirmed that the AirPods Max will continue to be produced and sold, it’s clear that the company is shifting its focus toward its more successful products, particularly the AirPods Pro, which continues to receive regular updates and enhancements.
In its fourth year on the market, the AirPods Max will remain available, but without major updates on the horizon. As Apple’s attention shifts elsewhere, the AirPods Max may now appeal to a more niche audience, relying on occasional software updates to keep it relevant in the competitive landscape of premium headphones.
