A recent survey conducted by Setapp has highlighted that nearly half of Apple developers remain uncertain about creating applications for the Apple Vision Pro. While some are exploring its potential, many are hesitant due to unclear market prospects and the technical hurdles that come with developing for a new platform.
The Shift Toward AI Development
The survey findings show a marked trend in the developer community: 60% are currently incorporating AI features into their apps, up from 50% in 2023. In comparison, only 35% have firm plans to develop applications specifically for the Vision Pro.
Iykola Savin, Director of Product Management at MacPaw, emphasized that AI continues to dominate the technology sector. He expects even more widespread AI adoption in 2025, pointing out that developers are prioritizing AI over the Vision Pro in order to stay competitive in a rapidly evolving tech environment.
Barriers to Vision Pro Adoption
Several factors are contributing to the hesitation among developers regarding the Vision Pro. A major concern is the uncertain demand from consumers, coupled with the significant cost of developing for a new platform. Despite the potential of Apple’s visionOS system, the platform’s unclear trajectory in terms of mass adoption is making developers wary about investing time and resources.
Additionally, the survey reveals a noticeable trend: only 20% of developers are now exclusively relying on the Mac App Store for distribution. Instead, many are turning to alternative platforms like Setapp to release their apps.
The Shifting Landscape of Tech Development
While the Vision Pro faces challenges, Apple is optimistic about the device’s future, positioning it as a cutting-edge mixed-reality tool for both work and entertainment. However, the current focus on AI development indicates that developers are prioritizing tools that cater to present-day market demands.
Heading into 2025, the success of the Vision Pro largely depends on Apple’s ability to address the concerns of developers and prove that the platform can be both profitable and sustainable. In the meantime, AI innovation remains a dominant force in shaping the direction of app development.
